Learn How to Aerate Your Lawn
Have you noticed your lawn isn’t in prime Summer shape? Do you want healthy grass that your neighbor is going to admire? Your issue might not be the lack of water, it might actually be the fact that you need to aerate your lawn. Aerating your lawn is one of the simplest yearly tasks that gets your grass in tip-top shape.
What’s aerating your lawn you might ask? This is what needs to happen to help your lawn grow thick deep and strong. When you aerate your lawn you are creating little holes in the soil that are about 1/4 – 1/2 inches deep. The best time to aerate your grass is when your lawn is compacted it causes the lawn to feel stressed for oxygen and water and that’s when you get dead grass. It’s a good idea to aerate your lawn before it dies off, but aerating it when it is under stress will allow it to regrow.
Your lawn needs aeration when:
- lawn is compacted (someone drives on it, kids are playing in one section for a long period of time)
- lawn is looking stressed
- before planting grass seed
How to aerate your lawn:
Aerating your lawn does not need to be a daunting task and you have a few different options:
Spike aerators- this is when you poke a hole into the soil usually with something metal
Slicing aerators- these are rotating blades that cut or slice through grass
Core or plug aerators- these are usually used by professionals but are rows of hollow tines that remove plugs of soil from your lawn and deposit them on top
To aerate your lawn you can always do it yourself or call a local landscaping company to do it for you.
What to do after:
Right after you aerate your lawn it is a good idea to seed and fertilize the grass. It is also recommended to water the grass to allow all the nutrients to get absorbed into the soil. The nutrients can directly go into the freshly aerated lawn providing new growth. As a reminder, aerating your lawn should be done at least once a year. By aerating your lawn, you are ensuring your lawn is at its lushest green potential.
